Clematis are among the most popular climbing plants for good reason. They offer a spectacular show of flowers in a huge range of colours and shapes, perfect for scrambling over fences, trellis, arches and obelisks.

The golden rule is "feet in the shade, head in the sun". Plant clematis around 5 to 8cm deeper than its pot level in rich, moist but well-drained soil, and shade the roots with a mulch or low planting. Water well through its first summer.
