Elder (Sambucus) is a hardy, easy-to-grow shrub with a lot to offer. Flat clusters of fragrant creamy elderflowers appear in early summer, perfect for cordials, followed by glossy dark berries in autumn that birds adore.

Elders grow well in sun or partial shade in most soils. Prune in late winter to keep them in shape. Please note that elderberries should always be cooked before eating.
