Carnivorous plants are some of the most fascinating plants you can grow. From the snapping traps of the Venus fly trap to the sticky tentacles of the sundew, they catch their own food and make brilliant talking points.

Our carnivorous plants for sale include the Venus fly trap (Dionaea muscipula), the Cape sundew (Drosera capensis), Alice's sundew and the trumpet pitcher plant (Sarracenia). You'll also find the Kew Pocketbook on carnivorous plants.

Most carnivorous plants love a bright, sunny windowsill and should be watered with rainwater or distilled water, kept sitting in a shallow tray. Never feed them fertiliser. Browse more unusual houseplants.

Frequently asked questions

How do I care for a Venus fly trap?
Give it lots of bright light, ideally a sunny windowsill, and keep the compost moist by standing the pot in a saucer of rainwater. Never use fertiliser or ordinary compost.
What water should carnivorous plants have?
Use rainwater, distilled water or reverse-osmosis water. Tap water contains minerals that build up and can kill carnivorous plants.
Do I need to feed my carnivorous plant?
Indoors they usually catch enough insects on their own. You can occasionally offer a live insect, but never feed them meat.
Do carnivorous plants need a winter rest?
Venus fly traps and Sarracenia need a cool winter dormancy, when growth slows and some leaves die back. Keep them cool and slightly drier until spring.
