The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is a handsome evergreen with year-round appeal. In autumn it's covered in clusters of white flowers at the same time as its round, red, strawberry-like fruits, and its rich red-brown bark adds winter interest too.

It's hardy and tolerant of coastal conditions. Plant in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil, and shelter young plants from cold winds.
