The ponytail palm is actually not a palm at all! It is a member of the asparagus family. It gets its name from its large swelling at its base in the soil. This acts a kind of water reserve, perfect for life in the desert. The large swelling with long hair like leaves resembles a ponytail, hence its name.

It's natural habitat is the deserts of central America and it loves moist soil in partial light.
