Meet the Cleistocactus colademononis (Monkey Tail Cactus)

Native to the high-altitude mountains of Bolivia, this cactus comes from rocky, arid slopes where conditions are harsh and dramatic—cold nights, intense sun, and very little water. It was only scientifically described in 2006, making it a relatively recent discovery in the plant world, despite its instantly iconic look. The plant’s long, trailing stems are densely covered in soft, white, hair-like spines, thought to protect it from intense sun and sudden temperature drops in its native habitat. These cascading stems make it naturally suited to growing over cliffs in the wild—and spilling beautifully from pots or hanging planters in cultivation. In spring and summer, it produces large, vivid red tubular flowers, which emerge from the sides of the stems rather than the tips. In its native environment, these blooms are adapted for pollination by hummingbirds, a common partner for brightly coloured, tubular cactus flowers in South America. Unusual, tactile, and full of character, the Monkey Tail Cactus has quickly become a cult favourite among collectors—proof that some of the most eye-catching plants are also the most recently discovered 🌵✨.

Growing & Care
