Opuntia cochenillifera is a species of prickly pear cactus native to Mexico and parts of Central America, where it grows in dry, rocky habitats. It forms tall, branching columns of flattened, spineless or lightly spined pads, giving it a more architectural and upright appearance than many other Opuntia species. Historically, it was also widely cultivated for cochineal dye production, as it hosts the cochineal insect used to create natural red pigment.
